About Westow

The civil parish of Westow is in the Rydale district of North Yorkshire. It lies in a very attractive landscape partly within the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From within the parish there are views northwards across the Vale of Pickering to the North Yorkshire Moors and southwards to the Yorkshire Wolds. On a clear day the view from Spy Hill includes the White Horse at Kilburn some 18 miles to the North West.

The main habitation within the parish is Westow village located which is 5 miles west of the market town of Malton and 2 miles from the A64 trunk road between York (15 miles) and Scarborough (30 miles). See Finding Westow. There are also small clusters of houses at Firby and Kirkham as well as a number of farms.

The area has strong links with agriculture and is surrounded by a mixture of arable and livestock farmland. There is also a strong equine tradition in the wider area including racing stables at Malton and the Middleton Hunt. The population is varied including not only people connected with agriculture but a range of professional and trades people both working and retired.

There are many interesting features and facilities within the parish and neibouring areas (see Westow Village and Around Westow ).

The parish has a range of facilities for entertainment and sport (see Westow Village, Sport and Children's Play and Events). Unfortunately, like so many villages, it has lost its school, Post Office/General Store and chapels but Malton provides those services that cannot be found in the Parish (see Local Services).

There is an active Parish Council and Neighbourhood Watch and details of their activiries and other items of interest are included on this site and posted on the Parish Notice Board.
